World Tourism Day is celebrated annually on September 27th and this year, to mark the occasion, MIDI plc welcomed the public to the recently restored Fort Manoel. The aim of World Tourism Day is to create awareness among the international community on the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic values.
Located on Manoel Island and overlooking Marsamxett Harbour, Fort Manoel forms part of Malta's rich baroque military history. The fort was built in the 18th century by the Order of Saint John, under the rule of Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena. In 1800 Fort Manoel was occupied by the British military and during World War II sustained numerous direct hits from the Axis air forces.
Fort Manoel remained in use by the British until 1964 when Malta gained Independence from Great Britain.
MIDI plc has been tasked with the restoration of Fort Manoel and today, following numerous studies of historical plans and meticulous work, much of the fort has been reinstated to its former glory. The restoration is an on-going process, so much so that following the recent reinstatement of a replica bronze bust of Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena, on the main gate of Fort Manoel, further restoration works have commenced on the fort’s north-facing bastion walls. This phase of works are projected to be completed by early next year.
